What the papers say - Cop26

Preparations are intensifying as Glasgow prepares to host up to 30,000 people for the UN climate change conference.

With more than 120 world leaders attending the event, which takes place at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) from 31st October to 12th November, road users can expect disruptions as many routes around the venue will be closed for up to three weeks. Transport Scotland said that “severe congestion” is expected on certain days due to a combination of road closures, security measures for the delegates and likely protests.

The impact of the conference is also expected to be felt outside the city, with the transport network in Glasgow and the Central Belt predicted to be extremely busy. The RMT union has confirmed that ScotRail workers will continue to strike from November 1-12 amid a dispute over pay and conditions.

Security operations in Glasgow throughout the conference will include approximately 10,000 police officers from all parts of GB on a daily basis. Firearms officers, dog handlers, mounted branch, search teams and the marine unit will all be used. During Cop26 itself, England's Ministry of Defence will monitor the waterway providing a round the clock armed police presence on the river. Temporary airspace restrictions will be in place across east and central Scotland from 11.59pm on 30th October to 11:59pm on 13th November.

Stuart Patrick, chief executive for Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, states that they are working with the city council and the Scottish and English Governments to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. Five schools and nurseries in the area closest to Cop26 venues will however be closed on 1st and 2nd November.

There have been concerns about how the city will look during the summit, with refuse workers set to go on strike during the conference if a pay dispute is not resolved and with tens of thousands of people expected to travel to the city, concerns have also been raised about the cost and availability of accommodation. The Scottish Government has urged people to host attendees for free or at a low price as part of the Cop26 programme.
